Best Time to Trek in Nepal: Spring, Autumn, Winter or Monsoon?

By Sustainable Journeys TeamAugust 25, 2026Updated August 25, 2026

Compare Nepal trekking seasons by weather, views, crowds and route choice, from autumn and spring classics to quieter winter and monsoon options.

Nepal can be visited year round, but the best trekking season depends on what you want most: clear mountain views, warmer days, fewer crowds, flowers, festivals or lower prices. The same route can feel completely different in October, March or January.

If you already have fixed travel dates, start by comparing our Nepal treks and all Nepal packages. If your dates are flexible, this guide will help you choose the strongest window.

Autumn: September to November

Autumn is the classic Nepal trekking season. The monsoon has cleared much of the haze, trails are generally open, and mountain visibility is often at its best. October and November are especially popular for Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Langtang Valley and shorter treks around Pokhara.

The trade-off is demand. Flights to mountain airstrips, popular tea houses and guide availability can tighten quickly. If you want an autumn trek, book early and avoid leaving key logistics until arrival in Kathmandu.

Best for: clear Himalayan views, first-time trekkers, high-altitude routes and photography.

Spring: March to May

Spring is the second major trekking window. Days are warmer, daylight is longer, and rhododendron forests bloom across many mid-hill routes, especially in the Annapurna and Langtang regions. Everest Base Camp also has a special atmosphere in spring because expedition teams are moving toward the mountain.

The trade-off is haze later in the season. March often feels fresher, while April and May are warmer but can bring more afternoon cloud and dust.

Best for: warmer trekking days, rhododendrons, Everest Base Camp energy and travellers who feel the cold.

Winter: December to February

Winter is cold, especially at altitude, but it can also be beautifully clear and quieter. Lower treks such as Ghorepani Poon Hill, parts of the lower Annapurna region, Kathmandu Valley hikes and selected cultural tours can work well with the right clothing and realistic expectations.

High passes and very high routes may be affected by snow, shorter daylight and closed lodges. Winter is best planned with local advice rather than copied from a generic high-season itinerary.

If you are visiting Nepal for the 54th ISAME Forum 2026 in December, short post-forum add-ons like Pokhara, Nagarkot or a mountain flight may be more comfortable than a long high trek.

Monsoon: June to August

Monsoon brings rain, cloud, leeches on forested trails and more disruption risk on roads and flights. It is not the first choice for classic Everest or Annapurna trekking.

That said, monsoon is not useless. Rain-shadow areas such as Mustang and parts of Dolpo can be attractive because they sit behind the main Himalayan barrier and receive less rainfall. These routes need careful permit planning and are best arranged through an experienced operator.

Which season should you choose?

Choose autumn if you want the highest chance of crisp mountain views and do not mind peak-season demand.

Choose spring if you want warmer conditions, blooming forests and a slightly softer version of the high season.

Choose winter if you prefer quieter trails and are happy to stay lower or accept colder trekking conditions.

Choose monsoon only if your route is suitable for rain-shadow trekking or your priority is cultural travel rather than mountain views.

Route-by-route thinking

Everest Base Camp works best for most trekkers in autumn or spring, with proper acclimatisation days. Annapurna Base Camp is also excellent in both windows, with spring adding the rhododendron advantage. Langtang Valley is flexible, but still benefits from the classic spring and autumn windows.

For lower tours, Nepal is more forgiving. Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and Nagarkot can fit around a broader range of dates. Browse our tours if you want Nepal scenery and culture without committing to a high-altitude trek.

Plan Your Trip with Sustainable Journeys Nepal
