Overview

Kathmandu Durbar Square, also known as Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square, is a historic palace complex in the heart of Kathmandu. It was the royal seat of Nepalese kings for centuries and is one of the most important cultural and historical landmarks in Nepal. Kathmandu Durbar Square is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kathmandu Valley. Historical Background: The square dates back to the Licchavi period (4th–9th century) and was further developed during the Malla dynasty (12th–18th century). Many of the palaces, temples, and courtyards were built by Malla kings, who made Kathmandu a center of art, architecture, and culture. Later, the Shah kings also used the palace complex for royal ceremonies. Architectural Significance: Famous for its Newari architecture, featuring intricately carved wood, stone, and metal. The complex includes pagoda-style temples, courtyards (chowks), and royal buildings. The craftsmanship seen in windows, doors, and struts is considered among the finest in Nepal. Major Attractions Inside the Square: Hanuman Dhoka Palace – the main royal palace named after the monkey god Hanuman. Kumari Ghar – residence of the Living Goddess Kumari. Taleju Temple – a towering temple dedicated to Goddess Taleju (opened to the public only during Dashain). Kasthamandap – the wooden pavilion believed to be built from a single tree and the origin of Kathmandu’s name. Religious & Cultural Importance: The square is a center for Hindu and Buddhist rituals, festivals, and ceremonies. Major festivals such as Indra Jatra, Dashain, and Seto Machhindranath Jatra are celebrated here. It remains a living heritage site where daily worship and traditional life continue. Why It Matters: Kathmandu Durbar Square represents the political, religious, and artistic history of Nepal. It is a symbol of Nepal’s rich past and the excellence of Newar civilization.
